Custom design work is at the heart of Dharma Design Furniture (DDF); it’s where the artistic rubber hits the road. Indeed, the genesis of most of the established DDF designs began as custom design requests. Such requests can range from specific size requirements of established designs to the creation of a completely unique design. However, the ultimate form of custom designing comes from the possession of spectacular wood, an irreplaceable plank or matched set, that magically seems to dictate a design which then manifests as a one-of-a-kind piece of functional art.
The custom design process begins with a conversation with the client to learn about the client, the space and the functional requirements of the piece in question. Very much a collaboration, this initial conversation sets the design process in motion, usually yielding a solid conceptual foundation. It’s at this point that rough cost and time issues can be discussed.

Then, over a period of a few days to a week, various details organically reveal themselves, upon which drawings are presented to the client. Then a second conversation follows to get the client’s feedback after which, if necessary, adjustments are made and drawings resubmitted. Usually this is sufficient to finalize the design and give exact cost, time and delivery information.
